Introduction
Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese art of inserting fine needles in certain parts of the body to treat various ailments. Acupuncture started in China, and has evolved over the last 3000 years to become a highly respected form of complementary medicine. It is particularly useful for musculo-skeletal problems, stress-related illness, headaches/migraine, nausea of pregnancy, and osteo-arthritis pain.

Acupuncture FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q. Is acupuncture painful?
A. Acupuncture is not entirely painless, as some acupuncturists would have you believe. However the pain is minor, and could be described more like a minor sting than a jab.
Q. How long does a session take?
A. Depending on your condition it may take from 15 to 30 minutes.
Q. How many sessions do I need to treat my condition?
A. Most conditions need at least 3 sessions, at weekly intervals. For long-standing conditions once you have improved to a certain level a "top-up" session is recommended every 1-2 months.
Q. Does it have any side effects?
A. Acupuncture is extremely safe. The worst side effect is the occasional bruising at the site of the needle insertion. Some patients feel a bit drowsy after a session.
Q. Does it work for helping to stop smoking?
A. There have been numerous studies to suggest that it does. However there is precious little hard evidence to support that suggestion. Most patients feel better after acupuncture and more confident at quitting.
Q. How much does it cost me?
A. If you are a private patient see the cost chart below. For existing patients of Centenary Surgery requesting acupuncture treatment there is a flat fee of £20 per session.
Q. How do I make an appointment?
A. For Centenary Surgery patients please make a normal appointment and discuss the suitability of acupuncture treatment with Dr Ooi. For private patients please phone the surgery (01236 423355), give your name and number to the receptionist and Dr Ooi will get back to you.
