Centenary Surgery was established in 1988 when Dr Ooi took it over as Whifflet Surgery located at Easton Place, Whifflet, Coatbridge. It was a small, rather delapidated surgery operating from leaky and run-down premises. In 1992 we moved to Centenary Gardens, and established ourselves as a modern 21st century general practice, embracing the best of modern evidence-based medicine, whilst retaining traditional family medicine values.

We are by definition a "single-handed" practice. Dr Ooi is the principal general practitioner. He is supported by a full complement of his primary care team. On his right are his Practice Manager Helen Ooi (also his wife and obviously his boss) and his Practice Nurse. On his left are his loyal faithful and uncomplaining receptionists Ann, Margaret, Jean and Pauline. Immediately behind him are his full team of supporting staff, including district nurses, health visitors and counsellors. Together we work very much as a unified team...we strongly believe that successful modern general practice is based very much on team-work. Every member of the team has a very important role to play in order that the patient receives the right care by the right person at the right time.

Whilst retaining the traditional values of a single-handed personal practice we are no slouches at embracing modern medicine. We work closely with the Coatbridge and Lanarkshire Primary Care Organisation. We are very much involved in the Lanarkshire Single-Handed Association. We follow closely local and national clinical governance guidelines. Dr Ooi is also a GP Appraiser for Lanarkshire PCO, and is an Associate of the GMC's Fitness to Practise Directorate, sitting on doctors' hearings in Manchester or London regularly.

We have also achieved the Royal College of General Practice (RCGP) Scotland's Practice Accreditation Award in 2005. This is an award which recognises the high levels of administrative, managerial, and clinical standards in the practice. To gain the award we had to undergo a stringent and robust scrutiny and examination process run by the RCGP. We are proud to display the achievement certificate in the waiting room.

New Patients

If you are not currently a patient at Centenary Surgery and would like to join please pick up a registration form from reception. Once you hand in your signed form the receptionist will make an interview consultation for you with Dr Ooi. We do not have an obligation to accept you, as we may decide that your health needs are best met by a bigger practice, say at Coatbridge Health Centre. Currently the practice list is very full. From time to time our list will be closed, depending on staffing levels, holidays, and other issues.
